May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).
One thing that I do is listen to the Bible, podcasts from IHOP, sermon CD’s, or worship music. This is not to have it playing in the background, but to really focus my mind on it. Learning to discipline my mind, wash my mind, in the Word and in God’s perspective. I find that it doesn’t so much matter what it is I’m listening to (as long as it’s Biblical, of course), as it matters that it is taking my mind off of myself and on to God.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV).
Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word (Ephesians 5:25-26, NIV).
Another suggestion is to use that time to meditate on a scripture. Choose a scripture at the beginning of the day, or week. Ask God to bring one to your attention during your quiet time. Every time you find your mind beginning to wander or worry, recall it to that scripture. Write it down. Read it. Repeat it to yourself aloud. Sing it. Pray it. Then start over again. Allow God to penetrate your mind and emotions with the truth of it. Let it become life to you.
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV).
