Writing a Vision Statement

Who Needs a Vision Statement?

We do! We moms who devote so much of our time to caring for our families and households, who are needed by so many others on a daily basis, who give and give . . . we need God’s perspective on our lives. We need to have a purpose behind why we do the things we do. A vision that will inspire us every day to grow in our relationship with the Lord and in the calling for which He has made us.

Where there is no revelation (or prophetic vision), the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law (Proverbs 29:18, NKJV).

When God has not given you his dream and vision – if you do not have a goal on which you have your eyes fixed (as if you are climbing toward the peak of a mountain) – then you will be exposed, uncovered and made naked. You will not get anywhere, but will fruitlessly spin your wheels. But if you can keep God’s precepts and statutes, you will be blessed and happy (Proverbs 29:18, paraphrase based on a word study by Christal Stroup).

Each of us, if we want to stop spinning our wheels, must live our lives in the light of the revelation of God, both of who He is and of who we are in Him.

As you grow your understanding of God, you will also begin to understand yourself more clearly. You are unique from anyone else who has or ever will be created. And you are a reflection of God. Therefore, you display His character and personality in ways that no one else can. You have a unique purpose, which only you can fulfill.

And all of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more (2 Cor. 3:18, NLT).

We don’t want to live mediocre lives. Our Bible heroes grew to know who they were as they grew to know God intimately. As He revealed Himself to them, they grew in understanding of their purpose and calling. We know, for example, that Moses (Exodus 3), Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-10), Isaiah (Isaiah 6), Jesus (Luke 3:21, 22), and Paul (Acts 9) had defining moments when God revealed to them who He is and for what purpose He had created them. (Read these passages on your own!) Let us seek Him to find out who He is, and who He has called us to be.
